Roy - March 2010

RoyRoy has been with us since March 2009, when Aaron and his wife Clare took him on as trainee sheepdog and pet with the plan for him to eventually take over as top dog on the farm.

Roy is a 2 year old Border Collie who has been trained to work sheep in the Scottish foothills. Despite not having the typical fluffy Border Colie look with a rather houndish snout, short coat and distinctive tricolour markings he is actually a pedigree dog, him and his parents being registered with the
International Sheepdog Association.

Still being relatively young Roy was acquired only part trained, it being down to Aaron to continue his training to develop his basic knowledge and mould him to his way of working the sheep.

Roy was considered to be lacking a certain flair required to become a high class trialling dog for competitions by his first owner, but he still has more than enough potential to make a good working dog on the farm with good obedience and sheep control, as well as a hardy no-nonsense approach to bring our more rebellious hill sheep into line.

Aaron has had limited experience in working with sheepdogs in the past, so is training himself as much as Roy when working with him, but at the time of writing they both have made good progress with Roy having a stronger understanding of Aarons commands as well as having learnt new commands.

Having come from a quiet farm up-bringing and having quite a timid nature, Roy was initially very wary of people and busy environments, but although still a little wary of new faces and places, he is generally a lot more relaxed and well settled in his new home.

Although predominantly a working dog, Roy lives with Aaron and Clare and is treated as a pet. He travels around with Aaron during much of the day and goes for walks with Clare in the evenings. He even gets let out of his Kennel to come and snooze in the kitchen from time to time..... when he hasn’t been rolling in sheep muck at least!
